Yesterday, my office friends invited me to try out Cravings‘ Unlimited Coffee and Cakes promo in Eastwood Mall. For 150 PhP, you can stuff yourself silly with coffee and cake. Though I am currently on a diet, I gave it a go since we hardly see each other and it has been weeks since I last had cake.
I had high expectations from the cakes of Cravings. On the way, I couldn’t help but feel excited because the last time I ate in Cravings, I was really satisfied with the quality of their food. I even got more excited when a flier of the promo (same as the photo above) was handed to us as we entered Eastwood Mall. The Snickers Caramel Cake sure looked delicious.
There were only a few people when we arrived in Cravings. Perfect, we will not have a hard time catching the attention of the waiters if ever we’d like another slice of cake. I saw the display case of the cakes and my mouth just watered. One of the waiters approached us and asked what we’d like to have. We told her that we’d be trying out their promo.
My excitement fizzled down when the waiter told us that only four cakes were available. I was puzzled since there were a lot of cakes on the display case. The flier did mention that if our desired cake was unavailable, we could request for it 24 hours prior to our visit. But the thing was, the cakes were there! The four available cakes were Chocolate Caramel Cake, Devil’s Food Cake, Dulce de Leche, and Swiss Alps. No Snickers Caramel Cake. Oh well, we were there already so we might as well enjoy what’s available. The waiter asked each of us what cake we’d like to try out first. I went for Dulce de Leche.
While waiting for our cakes, they started serving the coffee. They placed containers of white sugar, brown sugar, and creamer on our tables then brought cups of coffee to our table.
I liked their coffee. It was brewed, but then again, I doubt that restaurants like Cravings would serve anything less than brewed. The strength was just right and it had this certain smoothness to it.
A few moments later, the waiter arrived with our slices of cake. When mine was laid in front of me, I was pretty much underwhelmed. The slice was thin, like an inch-and-a-half thick at the widest point. That seemed like a good idea since we’d be trying out different cakes but the thickness wasn’t really the issue, it was more of the appearance of the cake.
The cake looked like as if it was hacked by a cleaver rather than sliced by a cake knife. The taste was okay but Red Ribbon’s take on Dulce de Leche was better. The chiffon was a bit dry as well.
After all of us were done with our first slice, we called the attention of the waiter to ask for more cake. This time, I went for Devil’s Food Cake. To those who doesn’t know, Devil’s Food Cake is a chocolate cake smothered with meringue icing. It is one of my favorites in Chocolate Kiss Cafe, a restaurant inside the University of the Philippines Diliman.
The Devil’s Food Cake was horrible. If you’ve ever eaten cassava cake, the cake’s texture and consistency was like that, only chocolate-flavored. The icing was bad as well. Taste-wise, the icing was okay, but again, the consistency was off. It was a bit runny and squishy, unlike the soft-chewy-sticky texture of Chocolate Kiss Cafe’s version.
The next cake I ordered was the Swiss Alps Cake. I was supposed to order the Chocolate Caramel Cake but my friend told me that the cake’s base was the same with the Devil’s Food Cake so I didn’t go for it.
Thank goodness this one’s a bit good. The cake tasted like white chocolate. The chiffon was a tad dry like the Dulce de Leche but the overall taste was nice. I guess I just like white chocolate a lot.
My third slice was my last. I felt cheated by the promo, for 150 PhP, I could have ordered a slice of a really good cake in Banapple or Chocolate Kiss Cafe plus a cup of coffee. At least Cravings’ coffee was good. I just wish that they made it clear that only four cakes are available in their promo.
note: All six of us had same sentiments about the quality of the cakes.

Sa fliers nila before, they say na 3 or 4 cakes lang ang available for the promo. Although grabe lang ‘yung slice, ha. Medyo madaya. Ang hindi ko alam ay kung available ba ‘tong promo sa Katip. Ang alam ko kasi nung una, sa West Ave lang siya.
jasetiojanco said:
Ganun? Dun sa flier na iniabot nila sa amin walang nakasaad na 3-4 cakes lang ang mayroon para sa promo. Pero ayun, I wouldn’t have cared if the cake slices were paper thin as long as masarap siya. Pero hindi sila ganoon kasarap. Sana off-day lang nung cakes nila nung kumain kami. 😦

oh… I see… I was about to try their cakes when I saw this resto in Jessica Soho’s episode today.. I immediately searched for it in the net then this appeared hahah… Hindi mo talaga malalaman na 3-4 lang na cake ang available kasi look at their poster. ang daming cakes na nakalagay. hay… I thought its a good offer kasi nafeature xa sa Jessica Soho. Hindi pala. Mukha ngang hindi masarap yung mga cakes na yan… hay….. need to look for another resto na may msarap na foods haha.
jasetiojanco said:
Yeah, the flier was indeed misleading. It had no mention that there would only be 4 cakes available for the promo. Also, as I have said in my entry, there were many cakes on display, not just 4. I sense something fishy with the 4-cake limitation but I’d rather not jump into conclusions.

Oh! And by the way… sa Jessica Soho they said over hundred daw gnagawa nilang cakes a day. kaya nacurious ako. tapos ung pinapakita nilang slice malaki so i thought nga mganda ung offer. with coffee pa coz I love coffee. ang ung inislice nilang cake is the one youre talking about on your blog. hahay… gosh…
jasetiojanco said:
To be fair, their coffee was nice. If you love coffee, go ahead and go to Cravings. The unlimited cakes would be a welcome bonus.

jasetiojanco said:
I hope so as well, I was able to try their cakes in their branch in Katipunan and I distinctly remember enjoying them. And yeah, the thickness of the slice doesn’t matter that much since it’s a cake-all-you-can promo. 😛

Hi, as i browse the net i found myself in your page and it is because of my cravings on the said promo, “coffee and cake all you want”. Very tempting indeed and mouth watering and i almost drool last night while watching KMJS ch7. Of course its a promo, there is always something unsaid about it. Based on what i have read on your review, the fallacy of promo is quite predictable. I almost send messages to all of my friends, pero mukang mapapahiya ako sa pag aaya ko to try it. Lol anyway the taste would really matter. Your review is very helpful and nice photos too. =D

hey sir…Do you think it’s worth the price? I’m a coffee drinker but not much…Is the promo limited only to coffee? or they are serving other beverage such as tea. I’m more of a tea drinker. Are the cakes too sweet? I prefer semi-sweet cakes.
jasetiojanco said:
Well, it is given that it’s just 150 PhP. But I can’t help but feel cheated not because of the price, but more of how it mislead us into thinking that we can try out all of their cakes. Also, as I have mentioned, the cakes weren’t really that good. If you really want to sink your teeth into a delicious slice of cake, I won’t recommend the ones in Cravings’ promo. As for opting for tea instead of coffee, I don’t think that tea’s included. A friend of mine told me that in Cravings Katipunan, they had the choice to go for hot or cold coffee, regular or decaf, but not tea.

jasetiojanco said:
Yeah, it does sound great given that its just 150. If you just want to have some cake as in you’re not really looking for something special, then by all means go ahead and try Cravings’ promo. But if you’re REALLY looking for some good, quality cakes, then look elsewhere. 🙂

jasetiojanco said:
No, they were just serving four. Probably they increased it to five but we only had four choices when we went there. As for their Shangri-la branch, that I’m not sure. A friend of mine told me that they serve six in their Katipunan branch.

What do you expect from a 150peso cake? Whatever it tastes like??im cool with??for those who wanted to taste a high end cake go to spiral. .now… Initially it is cheap so how lousy people think of gettin sumthin for nothin.
jasetiojanco said:
Well, I expected a lot from Cravings. Even if they jack up the price to 300 or lower it down to 50, I’d still expect food of good quality from them. Also, to answer your question, I expect a delicious slice of cake for 150 PhP. You can get a really good slice of cake from Banapple for less than a hundred, Chocolate Kiss’ Devil’s Food Cake was only 65 when I left UP, and the cakes (and cheesecakes) from CBTL are less than 150. Sure, you’d only be getting one slice but at least you’d be getting a good one.
Raquel said:

If you want a restaurant that serves good meals AND desserts, I would suggest that you go to Banapple or Mom & Tina’s. There are Banapple branches in Katipunan, Ayala Triangle, and Timog then there are M&T branches in Pasig along C5, Makati along dela Rosa, and Katipunan. 🙂

we tried this promo last sunday at eastwood the cake was fine but the service???? huh while every one got ttheir slice my kids waited for their piece but it came late( nawalan tuloy ng gana ang mga anak ko) tinatagalan ata talaga nila ang pag serve para di ka makakain ng madami :((
jasetiojanco said:
The service was okay when we went there. I guess you can’t have both fine food and good service at the same time, haha. :))

I was disapointed about the cake. Given the fact that it was CRAVINGS and they carry the name of CCA in their uniforms (as per featured in Kapuso), I would really expect something good. Whether it was just a promo, or it came from a different branch, the consistency of the cake should never ever change. It’s a classic mistake, they should’ve tried or tasted their food first before sending them out. And given that it was a promo, they should’ve made it more appealing since they are marketing their product, the customers should get a WOW experience, to spread the good news. And the thing about some branches giving six and some four …. what’s with that?
jasetiojanco said:
Exactly my points as well. I always equated Cravings with food of exceptional quality but my perception changed because of their cakes in the promo.
kaye said:
CCA is not that prestigious nor are their bakers that skilled. go ask around internationally. they are just of the same feather as CACS. it’s a different world out there. think le cordon or CIA. think logically, costing for unlimited cake and coffee is impossible unless they scrimp on the ingredients and sacrifice food taste.
Irsa said:
sayang, naintriga pa naman ako nun napanood ko to sa jessica soho last saturday. hahaha, their cheesecake looks enticing pa naman tapos ndi cxa included. sana 1 slice of premium cakes tapos the rest un regular lng at least u got to taste one of their good cakes para ndi maphobia un kakain. o well, imma try it pa rin…
jasetiojanco said:
I believe that’s what they’re doing since the Swiss Alps cake is a premium one if I’m not mistaken. Anyway, as I’ve said, you can do much worse with 150 PhP so I guess giving it a try won’t hurt. 😉
Sky said:
for 150 pesos, i think its worth it naman… tho may coffee pa right?
kung 3-4 different cakes ang pwedeng kainin.. kain lang.. =) 150 pesos is not bad.. UNLIMITED cakes naman siya..
~depende na rin siguro sa location.. try ko sa Katipunan Branch…
jasetiojanco said:
Depends, if you just want to fill yourself up with cake regardless of quality, then yeah, it’s worth it. But if you’re craving for a good slice of cake, look elsewhere.

I think the quality of food being served by Cravings is not as good as it was a few years ago. Just early this year, we dined at one of Cravings Group of restaurant, Oceana, across MOA. I was really thrilled with all the offerings and i was expecting to be “blown away” with their “creations”. I would expect nothing from a restaurant helmed by CCA. But man! I was disappointed big-time! The food (long forgotten) was bland, the meat (it was lamb I think) was tough. We had to leave and look for another place to have our dessert, ayoko na uli ma-disappoint, besidesthe fact that medyo mahal pa food sa resto. So there, from then on, I dont expect the food from cravings to be excellent, but mediocre at best. I would still be having their cake-&-coffee-all-you-can though later with my friends, can’t be choosy since it will be libre. And malay natin, it would be better this time. Thanks for the review =)

i read this review(which i thought a bit exaggerated at first, but found out this is a very subtle review after i had the cakes) last night before heading to cravings, though i was disheartened, i thought i should still give it a try since it’s only php150. there were 6 cakes available, but we only tried 4 of those because we can no longer bear the taste. the first cake (pastillas) was a so-so, but the succeeding cakes were awful(my apology for the term, but i couldnt find a more apt word to describe the cakes- dulce de leche, mango and another chocolate cake with mousse in between), I felt bad that i have to finish those cakes despite the taste (due to no left over policy). however, the coffee is good, thank goodness there’s coffee to push down the cakes.
jasetiojanco said:

and yung hindi ko masyadong type are:
1. dulce de leche
2. mango something :3
3. devil’s
4. carrot cake
